Safety first: Never open an electrical panel or attempt electrical work unless you are properly qualified. If you notice heat, smoke, sparking, or a burning smell, move to safety and contact emergency services when necessary.
Before planning the work
- Write down what is changing and which rooms or equipment will be affected.
- Note any recurring breaker trips, flickering lights, warm outlets, or unusual odours.
- Gather the electrical specifications for new appliances, heating equipment, or EV chargers.
- Ask whether the existing panel and service have enough capacity for the planned load.
- Confirm that required permits, inspections, and Quebec electrical requirements will be addressed.
Questions for an electrician
- Does the project require a dedicated circuit or panel upgrade?
- Are grounding, bonding, and protective devices appropriate for the installation?
- What access, shutdown time, and wall repairs should the homeowner expect?
- What documentation and warranty information will be provided when the work is complete?
After installation
- Keep invoices, equipment manuals, and inspection documents together.
- Label new circuits clearly and make sure the panel directory is readable.
- Ask how to operate new equipment safely and which warning signs require service.
